The other day I was visiting my sister in Emory Hospital following a procedure to correct an aneurysm. It was an amazing procedure which require an over night stay in ICU and seven days in the hospital following the surgery. The good news is she is headed home right as I speak.
On Friday I went down to see her and relieve Dearld her husband. While I was there she had to use the bathroom. I buzzed the nurse, but no response. After no response she told me I was going to have to help her with the bed pan. This was a new experience for me. I had never put a bed pan up under anyone, much less my older sister. She gave some rather demanding instructions. I learned a few things about bed pans, like you put powder around and in them before you use them so they won't stick to your butt.
Bottom line I fail the test. I just couldn't get the bed pan situated just right. Finally I went out in the hall flagged down the nurse and said, "Listen if you don't get in here we are going to have a big mess!" She saved the day and I went on with other task like watching a TV with no sound while she moaned and groaned. Two hours later her husband showed back up. I don't know what took so long.
Later I asked Jane if she remembered the bed pan. She laugh and made a comment that really stood out...she said, "Brother you have a lot of wonderful gifts, but one you don't have is the gift of healing." You know I don't have the gift of healing. My sister does, my dad does, but I don't. So if you need help with a bed pan don't call me, call them. The other thing is I don't feel guilty about it. I don't like bed pans nor do I want to do bed pans...next time my sister needs a bed pan she can get it herself.
On the other hand if you want to start something let me know...I love starting things from scratch.
